NYFW in Review: Top Trends & Vintage Inspirations

Living in NYC, it can’t be helped but to get caught up in Fashion Week, yet even the most seasoned veterans face “fashion overwhelm”. So after a little weekend breather, we’ve put together what you need to know to be on trend for Fall/Winter 2013.

For seven days, the runways burst with variety — bold prints, flowing sheers, colorful furs — but what’s the takeaway? Here’s our roundup of the top new styles to appear during NYFW Fall/Winter 2013.

Fur

Fur showed up in countless collections, including Badgley Mischka, Herve Lager, and BCBG Max Azria. Not simply coats, but vests, collars, and even fur accents appeared in shades both subtle and absolutely shocking (think neon Muppet yellow, via Jeremy Scott).

Cutouts

Cutouts and skin-baring designs are clearly no longer limited to the summer months. While Cushnie et Ochs delivered sophisticated versions of the geometric cutout bodycon, Rebecca Taylor’s feminine designs introduced us to the flirty shoulder cutout.

Burgundy

Let’s just call burgundy the new black, as deep shades of wine made a big mark this year. Marchesa featured the color in a number of their show-stopping Victorian-inspired gowns, Anna Sui demonstrated the versatility of the shade, pairing it with oranges and browns, and Diane Von Furstenberg made it shine in lush velvet fabrics.

Iconic Looks

In the midst of all of the creative innovation we saw during NYFW, many designers still chose to celebrate the iconic looks of the past. It was apparent that vintage inspiration played a big part throughout the week, proving that some styles truly are timeless.

MOD-INSPIRED. Anna Sui brought us mod-inspired looks in deep, fiery hues. Pattern-heavy and layered with accessories such as mini ties and jeweled pendants, this collection emphasized clean lines and geometric shapes.

1950s-INSPIRED. Barbara Tfank delivered femininity and class with her 50s-inspired collection featuring a-line and pencil skirts. Tfank added a luxe touch to the designs with metallic florals, brocade, and colored fur accents.

FLAPPER-INSPIRED. Jasper Conran took us back to the 1920s with a rainbow-hued collection of straight lines, cloche hats, and a touch of flapper flair. Simplicity was key in this collection, as color coordinating was kept to a minimum, allowing the designs themselves to truly shine.
