What Not to Wear to Prom

16 Apr

Arguably prom is the most look forward to event of high school.  The countless hours of shopping to find the perfect dress and accessories is all about looking your very best. Because it’s a night of hallmark memories, here’s 4 tips on what not to wear to prom.

Prom is endlessly relived and immortalized through Facebook posts, Instagram snaps, and family photo-ops. The last thing you’ll want to be remembered for is a style blunder of fashion faux pas. To ensure your prom experience is one you can look back on with a smile, as opposed to a wince, here are some tips about what not to wear to prom.

Don’t be a Showgirl. While prom is your night indulge in glamor, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Everyone loves a bit of flash and sparkle, but pile on too much glitz and bright colors, and you’ll run the risk of looking like a Vegas showgirl, or a figure skater. How do you know if your dress is inching into showgirl territory? If it’s neon colored and contains more layers of ruffles than you can count, there’s your red flag.

Don’t be a Rude Princess. While you’ll want to wear something that wows, make sure that you’re the ultimate focal point, and not the dress. A princess dress might make you feel like the belle of the ball, however a big, poufy numbers could overwhelm you, your date, and quite possibly everyone around you on the dance floor.

Don’t be Indecent. Keep in mind that there’s sexy, and then there’s overdoing it. While short, above-the-knee dresses are currently in, prom is still a formal event. There’s nothing wrong with a cute style that shows some skin, but don’t go overboard. Pass over any dress with a hem so short you can’t bend over, and don’t go too crazy with high slits and cutouts.

Don’t be a Stilt Walker. Heels have the allure of making you super sexy and giving you a high fashion look. But this look is instantly lost when you can hardly walk at a level or graceful gait. Wearing a formal gown and clopping along like a sloppy balancing act is the worst kind of look you could have on your prom night. So keep your shoes to a sensible height: Consider how your feet will feel after 3 hours of dancing — kicking off your heels on the dance floor because of tired tootsies is another look to avoid.
